HydroDrags set for April

National drag and speed races to take place in Florida

WaterTop Unlimited of Melbourne, Fla. has announced the creation of a new personal watercraft event with the launch of the first HydroDrag National PWC drag and speed races.

WaterTop announced its plans during the recent Miami International Boat Show, which will see the WaterTop PWC Rally Series expand into a full weekend of activities that encompass every aspect of the sport. Activities for the weekend will include the RIVA Racing HydroDrag Spring National and Sebastian PWC Rally. An area tour, new product demos, reception and poker run are also scheduled.

“The HydroDrag concept is what we see as the next big thing in the world of personal watercraft,” says Tim McKercher, president of WaterTop Unlimited. “We are excited to bring this vision to reality with RIVA Racing and combine it with our popular Rally events.

“We are also excited to produce a weekend of watercraft activities that cover nearly every aspect of the sport combining the HydroDrags with freeriding at Sebastian Inlet and the Rally. The WaterTop PWC Rally in Sebastian will make history.”

Captain Hiram’s Resort and Marina in Sebastian, Fla. will host the three-day event, scheduled for April 11 to 13, 2008. The HydroDrag event will take place at the C-54 canal west of Sebastian, which WaterTop has dubbed the ‘Bonneville Salt Flats of waterways’.

Using the WaterTop Launch Pad system, the event will feature a top speed and 1/8 mile, head-to-head, double elimination drag racing format. The launch pad will pit two watercraft in a standing start format and the gate dropping will send both competitors down their designated lanes. Competing PWCs will be split into four classes based on the American Power Boat Association (APBA) standards—Hydro GP (nitrous boosting welcome), Hydro Limited, Hydro Stock and Hydro Vintage (1997 or prior model year).

“Our overriding inspiration at WaterTop is make our projects and events remarkable,” says McKercher. “We see the HydroDrags as creating a new category of use in the PWC industry. Giving those racing their friends up and down waterways an organized venue to do what they are already doing on their own. Its time for something new and the RIVA Racing HydroDrags is it.”
